AMA conference 2008
WHY? - discovering the secrets of public behaviour and the arts
In partnership with the Guardian, the Observer and Guardian Unlimited.
Sponsored by Tickets.com
Tuesday 29th July to Thursday 31st July 2008 at:
What's it all about?
Put 'big questions' into
Google
and it comes up with mainly big science / religion / philosophy questions such as 'why is the sky blue?', 'why war?' and 'why are we here?'.
It seems a unfair that they should get all the big questions so at this year's AMA conference we are going to look into people's behaviour and the arts i.e. 'why do those arts go-ers go where they go, do what they do?'.
The 2008 conference will focus on public behaviour and the arts and on finding out what makes someone choose to take part in a particular arts activity and what makes someone else decide not to.
'Why' is often a more difficult question to answer than who, when, how many, and how often. It involves qualitative rather than quantitative data and people attend or participate in the arts for a range of different reasons. They might be conscious or unconscious decisions, follow a rational thought process, or be based on an emotional response.
The challenge for the arts and cultural sector is that many people attend for a mix of different reasons and this conference will aim to help delegates understand the complexity of audiences / visitors / participants in 2008. How is public behaviour changing, and how might we start to respond? The answer will also change over time, it is not static – people change, attitudes change, competition for their leisure time changes, technology changes. Arts organisations need to learn how to read and understand 'why' people engage or don't engage with their work on an ongoing basis if they are to continue to exist and thrive.
